Emotional Intelligence is a topic that often comes up under soft skill development in the corporate environment and I liked the idea of having a tool that would allow me to quickly do a test to gauge where my EQ is before attending a training session. For this project, I wanted to see how I could convert a PDF worksheet that requires an individual to do calculations based on answers into a mobile-friendly, interactive module that does the necessary calculations, gives feedback and allows the user to print a worksheet of the results to take it further. The idea is that this could serve as a pre-activity to an Instructor-led training opportunity.
I created an e-learning module in Articulate Storyline, making use of sliders to add more interactivity and engagement. I then used variables to allow for the auto-calculation of the final scores and to display the final results and recommended action going forward. Finally I used a combination of Javascript and PDF Maker to allow for the generation of a downloadable PDF document.
It took some trial and error to understand the variables and to ensure correct calculations of scores and display of feedback. Ultimately, I think I did learn quite a lot and have a good grasp of the possibilities that variables offer in Storyline.
I am not a programmer and experienced some challenges with the sync between Articulate Storyline and PDF Maker, as well as the editing of the final PDF. The final result works very well on a desktop, but unfortunately PDF Maker is not a suitable solution to allow for the PDF download on a mobile device.
I wanted the simple exercise to still be user-friendly for mobile devices, as this is something they could easily do while standing in a line or waiting for something else. Initially I did have a challenge determining how to allow the sliders to work on the mobile device, without advancing specific slides.
